Detroit Pistons’ new ‘Statement Edition’ jerseys feature black base and lettering

For the second time this summer, the Detroit Pistons have unveiled new jerseys for the 2022-23 season.

And unlike their “Classic Edition” uniforms, a throwback to the teal jerseys worn from 1996-2001, the latest set are brand-new.

The Pistons revealed their “Statement Edition” jerseys on Wednesday; the predominantly black uniform features “DET” in all caps on the front, and red and blue stripes across the chest and on both sides of the shorts.

“This year’s Statement Edition jersey aims to bridge some elements of the Pistons past with our exciting future,” Pistons chief marketing officer Alicia Jeffreys said. “When we launch a new uniform, every detail is considered, but first and foremost our goal is to create a jersey that Detroit can be proud of.”

The Pistons’ previous “Statement Edition” jerseys were gray with blue lettering (and red outlines) on the front. The new “Statement Edition” gear will be worn during “In It For My City” home games, beginning on on Oct. 26 (Atlanta Hawks).

The Pistons will have a special court design to go with the new kit, just as they plan to with the teal “Classic Edition” uniforms.

The other dates for the “Statement Edition” uniforms: Nov. 4 (Cleveland Cavaliers), Nov. 12 (Boston Celtics), Dec. 16 (Sacramento Kings), Jan. 13 (New Orleans Pelicans), Feb. 10 (San Antonio Spurs) and March 13 (Indiana Pacers).

Rather than have traditional “home” and “away” uniform sets, NBA teams can choose from five “editions” from Nike: Association, City, Classic, Icon and Statement. The traditional white set with “Pistons” across the front is the team’s “Association Edition,” while the usual blue set with “Detroit” on the chest is the “Icon Edition.” Last season, the franchise unveiled a new “City Edition,” a seeming mashup of previous uniforms from the franchise’s history — red with “Detroit” in blue lettering, featuring a blue version of the “flaming horse” logo from the franchise’s teal era and blue lightning bolts recalling the team’s uniforms from the late 1970s, all with teal outlines.
