The Detroit Pistons’ trade for James Wiseman is in jeopardy.
Gary Payton II, who was involved in the four-team deal that saw former Piston Saddiq Bey moved to the Atlanta Hawks, failed his physical with the Golden State Warriors on Friday according to a report from The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
The Warriors can rescind the trade, if they wish, and doing so would send Wiseman from Detroit back to Golden State and Bey back to the Pistons.

It would also send Kevin Knox, who was routed to the Portland Trail Blazers, back to the Pistons. If rescinded, it would rob the Pistons of a player in Wiseman that Troy Weaver described as having “tremendous upside,” and create a potentially awkward situation for the organization to amend with Bey and Knox.
Payton could be sidelined for up to three months with a core muscle injury that the Blazers hid from the Warriors during trade negotiations, according to Charania. Payton won a championship with the Warriors last summer and was positioned to give them needed defense at the wing. According to the NBA rulebook, teams have the power to void a trade if a player they acquired fails their physical.

The Pistons, along with the Hawks and Trail Blazers, are now at Golden State’s mercy. It would be the second time in 13 months the Pistons had a trade voided because of a failed physical, after last year’s Rodney McGruder-Bol Bol swap fell through.
