Detroit Pistons sign Eugene Omoruyi to contract for rest of NBA season

Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Pistons have filled their open roster spot for the rest of the season, signing forward Eugene Omoruyi to a contract, the team announced Thursday.

The Pistons previously signed Omoruyi to two 10-day contracts earlier in March.

Omoruyi in 10 games with the Pistons is averaging 8.8 points and shooting 56.9% on 2s, giving them some two-way production at forward, a spot that is their glaring weaknesses in the rebuild through three years under general manager Troy Weaver. Isaiah Livers has shown promise in that role off the bench, but has been oft-injured in his two years. Omoruyi, 26, is a poor 3-point shooter thus far, making 6 of 26 3s with the Pistons and 15 of 59 in his 37-game career (25.4%).

But at 6 feet 7 and 244 pounds, he brings some needed toughness, hustle and athleticism on defense.

The Pistons are 16-57, losing 15 of 16, to claim the worst record in the NBA with nine games remaining. It’s the franchise’s worst record after 73 games, tying the 1979-80 team.

The Pistons visit Toronto on Friday.
